Be(ginn)ing in dialogue, a research Prototype
This prototype is designed to give a taster of two aspect I would like to get involved with at this stage of my research:
This website is therefore an attempt to serve both purposes, exposing through text, image, photo and video documentation how movement material is generated through given tasks, and exploring different ways of communicating these ideas in order to develop a lenguage to share a more detailed understanding of the work. Aim of this prototype: -To develop a simple scheme to allow the dancer to master generating movement applying given tasks. Objectives of this prototype: -To formulate different ways of communicating the tasks. -To create a series of exercises through which the dancer can learn to apply this system in the context of an improvisation. |
The following Study Samples give an idea about how the research is being done: https://beginningindialogue.weebly.com/study-sample-1-body-parts--surface-and-bones.html https://beginningindialogue.weebly.com/study-sample2-body-parts--organs.html The practice that arises from the exercises is concerned with the development of a methodology in which dancers explore an interaction between their bodily awareness (detailed knowledge of their physicality, initially according to set parameters) and their mental awakeness (capacity to recognise in the moment ‘what’ they are doing, initially according to set parameters). The study will consider how physical tasks can lead to affect states of mind. For this purpose, the designed exercises are based on knowledge gained from Choreology (to help the generating and analysing material), BMC and VMI practices (to support a holistic approach). The dancers follow the given tasks to access distinctive mental states which allow for improvised movement material to emerge. The material originating in the exercises can be looked at from an aesthetic perspective through Laban’s structural model and effort graph and will be observed and edited through the lenses of psychology, ethnology and mindfulness I envision a third part of the research being an assessment of the chronological development of a pedagogical improvisation method. For the purposes of investigating both choreographic and pedagogical aspects, an extensive period of practice-based research will be needed for the eventual production of an improvisatory composition. |
Motivation
Being aware of one’s actions, reactions and responses within a context is something I find most important, especially in the face of current states of global instability, where we witness turmoil, conflict and uncertainty. Conscious choice, independent critical thinking and cooperation skills are threatened by encouraged thoughtlessness, consume and distraction. Exercising presence (in body and in thought) in artistic practice, has led me to let go of expectation and conditioning, bringing to a recognition of where my attention is and how from there I could act consequently.
What If I resist the task?
What if I disagree with it?
What if I disagree with my
resistance to the task?
How do I resist, quit, leave?
What if I am aware of my disagreement?
What if I don’t want to follow nor escape?
